January got off to a bright but cold & frosty start! Temperatures dropped to -5ºC for a few days and the Water of Leith had a thin layer of ice in multiple sections along the river. However, I was only in Edinburgh for 8-9 days this month, as I headed off to Australia for 3 weeks where the temperature reached +46ºC…. a mere +51ºC higher than Edinburgh!!!
I was out on the river several times on those first 8-9 days where I was filming/photographing a water rail that I finally managed to track down. I also managed to get some unusual images of ice on the river (images below) – it really is amazing what nature can do.
As my trail cameras were still out & filming on the river whilst I was away, I managed to put together my monthly video when I got back which helped get me through my jet lag! You can see January’s video HERE
I was in Melbourne for 2 weeks and Sydney for the last week in January. I hired a car in Melbourne & did about 1,000 kilometres over 5 days, visiting rivers and a handful of recommended wildlife hotspots. It was fantastic being able to photograph wildlife in brighter lighting conditions than I am used to here in Edinburgh. You can see some of the images that I tookHERE
