Latest Photos – May 2023

May 31, 2023

May has flown by faster than I could possibly have imagined.  Trips to the Isle of May to photograph puffins and a few days later to the Bass Rock to photograph gannets were, without doubt, the highlights of a busy month – I’ve done separate posts for both of those trips.

Back in Edinburgh we were awash with numerous ducklings, cygnets, goslings & various other chicks! The feeding of these wee creatures meant that the adults were very active, in every corner of the city.  BUT needless to say, their numbers can reduce rapidly, as predators appear – see picture below of a crow swooping in on 4 mallard ducklings – they survived, as the crow went away empty handed…on that occasion!  Foxes have been seen early most mornings and they too have had young mouths to feed, in May, as well.

Swallows have returned and butterflies have been appearing, as many flowers/bushes start to bloom – summer has (almost) arrived!

The otters have been out and about a lot this month and they are always a joy to watch.

And finally…. I spotted a sandpiper on the Water of Leith this month which is a first for me – (fifth photo, standing on boulder in the water)
