This was my 11th visit (I think) to the Isle of May. I’ve visited in all kinds of weather but this visit was one of the warmest, with not too much breeze! The bright sunshine can be too harsh for photography, so that made me think a bit more about what sort of shots I was taking.
On the boat trip out, we heard that the puffin numbers were up from 92,000 to 104,000 which is great news. Sadly, however, we also heard that there were no arctic terns around this year. The presence of orcas in the Firth of Forth recently has kept the number of seals down and there were only a handful around the island.
Puffin breeding had started earlier this year, so there were many puffins getting ready to leave the island. Thankfully, there were still plenty puffins around the island. Whether it was my 1st or 11th visit, the puffins had me mesmerised from start to finish. Already looking forward to my next trip!!
Here’s a small selection of photos from Thursday’s visit.
