Overlooking the Edinburgh skyline and sitting alongside the world-famous Royal Botanic Garden, Inverleith Park is one of the city’s most popular green spaces. The pond is the focal point for much of the park’s wildlife. Occasionally, the pond will attract the elusive water rail – however, you are probably more likely to hear it, than see it – with a bit of patience, it may well reveal itself.

Robins, wrens, blackbirds and chaffinches are common residents, while blue tits, great tits, coal tits and long-tailed tits move through the branches in noisy feeding flocks. Great spotted woodpeckers are occasionally seen and heard, and if you keep a close eye on the treetops, you may spot a sparrowhawk passing swiftly through in search of prey.
Inverleith Park is also an excellent place to enjoy some of Edinburgh’s smaller wildlife. Dragonflies and damselflies patrol the pond during the warmer months, while butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects make the most of the flower-rich grasslands around the park. Grey squirrels are regular visitors, and foxes are sometimes seen exploring the quieter areas during the early morning or at dusk.
One of the park’s greatest attractions is its setting. With panoramic views towards Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town and Arthur’s Seat, it’s easy to spend time simply enjoying the scenery while keeping an eye out for wildlife. The changing seasons bring something different with every visit, from the fresh greens of spring and nesting birds to colourful autumn foliage reflected in the pond.
