India 2024 – Goa & Mumbai

I spent half of April on the west coast of India (Goa & Mumbai) & managed to get out on a few mornings, with my camera. This was my 18th visit to India in 25 years but my very first time with a camera – in fact, having just started wildlife photography 3 years ago, this was my first time photographing any wildlife, outside of Scotland!!

There is an amazing array of wildlife just behind most of the beaches in Goa, in the wooded areas and scrublands, where I have frequently wandered in the past, looking for wildlife. I was fairly sure I’d see Black Kites, Brahminy Kites & hopefully Kingfishers & I wasn’t disappointed.  In my search for these birds, I came across a whole array of wildlife all within a mile or so of where we were staying for a few days in week one.  In week two, we moved further south & stayed in beach huts for a week & once again found a huge amount of wildlife all around us.  The kingfishers in the pictures below are White Throated Kingfishers and are probably about 20-30% bigger than our Eurasian kingfishers that we have in UK.

The final part of our trip, we flew up to Mumbai where there is a massive population of black kites in the skies all day.  When I first visited Mumbai 25 years ago, I could not believe there were so many birds of prey, circling just above our heads – I’ve always loved watching kites (Black, Red or Brahminy) ever since.

Here is a selection of some of the shots taken on the trip.
